Veterinary Outreach Program
For many people, pets are family. They provide companionship, emotional support, routine, and a sense of purpose—especially during times of instability. When people are struggling, their pets are often a critical source of comfort and connection. Supporting the health of pets supports the health of people.
Sanguen’s Veterinary Outreach Clinics recognize the powerful bond between people and their animals and the role pets play in overall health, well-being, and housing stability.
Why Veterinary Outreach Matters
The need for veterinary outreach is closely connected to the growing homelessness and affordability crisis in Waterloo Region. Since 2021, homelessness has more than doubled, with over 2,300 people currently experiencing homelessness or precarious housing. Seniors, women with children, and other vulnerable groups are being disproportionately affected.
Many people facing housing insecurity have pets. Too often, they are forced into an impossible choice: protect their own stability or protect the health and safety of their animal companion.
While some local shelters now allow pets, this shift has also created new challenges. Accessing routine or urgent veterinary care remains a major barrier. Without support, people may delay seeking shelter, healthcare, or housing out of fear of losing their pets or being unable to meet their needs.
Program Overview
Sanguen’s Outreach Veterinary Clinics provide free, compassionate veterinary care to people experiencing homelessness or housing instability. Clinics are held 4–6 times per year and are delivered in partnership with local organizations, shelters, and veterinary professionals.
These clinics help:
- Keep pets healthy and safe
- Reduce barriers to accessing shelter and support services
- Support emotional well-being and mental health
- Strengthen trust and engagement with care systems
- Promote dignity, stability, and housing readiness
By supporting animal health, we help create better outcomes for people—recognizing that health is deeply interconnected.
Partnership-Based Care
Veterinary Outreach Clinics are arranged through Sanguen’s partner agencies and programs. This collaborative approach ensures clinics are responsive to community needs and aligned with existing supports for people experiencing homelessness.
As shelters and housing programs continue to evolve to better accommodate pets, these clinics play a critical role in supporting both individuals and their companions during periods of transition and uncertainty.
