HIV

Sanguen provides testing, prevention, treatment, and outreach for people living with or at risk of HIV. We deliver care through a harm reduction, low-barrier approach, supporting people without judgment and meeting them where they’re at.

This page offers an overview of HIV, prevention options like PrEP, and how Sanguen can help. More detailed testing and treatment information is available on our Testing and Treatment page.

What Is HIV?

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that affects the immune system. Without treatment, HIV can weaken the body’s ability to fight infections. With today’s medications, people living with HIV can live long, healthy lives.

HIV is passed through certain body fluids, including blood and sexual fluids. It is not spread through casual contact like hugging, sharing food, or being in the same space.

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)

PrEP is a medication that helps prevent HIV for people who are HIV-negative and at ongoing risk. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective.

Sanguen offers access to PrEP through our clinic, including:

  • Daily PrEP
  • On-demand (event-based) PrEP for eligible individuals
  • Ongoing follow-up, bloodwork, and sexual health support

Our team can also help you navigate drug coverage and affordability, including public funding and insurance.

📞 To book a PrEP appointment, call 519-603-0223.

Living with HIV

People living with HIV who are on effective treatment can achieve viral suppression, meaning the virus is not detectable in their blood. When HIV is undetectable, it cannot be passed on sexually (U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable).

Sanguen supports people living with HIV by providing:

  • Referrals and follow-up care
  • STI testing and treatment
    Harm reduction support
  • Help navigating the healthcare system

HIV FAQs

Who should consider PrEP?
PrEP may be an option for people who are HIV-negative and at ongoing risk of HIV exposure. A healthcare provider can help determine if PrEP is right for you.

Do I need to take PrEP every day?
Some people take PrEP daily, while others may be eligible for on-demand PrEP. Your provider will help you choose the option that fits your needs.

Is PrEP expensive?
PrEP can be costly, but most people are able to access it with little or no cost. Sanguen can help you explore coverage options and apply for assistance if needed.

Do I still need testing while on PrEP?
Yes. Regular HIV and STI testing is an important part of PrEP care and is included in follow-up visits.
