Peer Workforce
Hiring and supporting people with lived and living experience is central to Sanguen’s philosophy and the way we deliver care. Peer workers bring expertise, trust, and connection that strengthen harm reduction services and improve outcomes across our programs.
Our peer workforce includes individuals who draw on their own experiences with substance use, poverty, mental health, and housing insecurity to support people in the community. Peers play a critical role in building relationships, reducing stigma, and making services more accessible and welcoming. We simply could not do this work without our Peer team!
Peer Outreach
Peer workers support Sanguen’s work by:
- Providing outreach at fixed and mobile locations
- Supporting harm reduction and Hepatitis C engagement
- Facilitating groups and sharing lived experience in education and training sessions
- Representing Sanguen at community events
- Supporting program delivery and administrative work
- Welcoming and supporting clients accessing care
Peers are trusted, non-judgmental, and approachable—often serving as the first point of connection to health and harm reduction services.
Supporting Our Peer Workforce
Sanguen is committed to creating safer, more supportive, and more sustainable work environments for peer workers. This includes:
- Flexible scheduling that recognizes fluctuating health, life circumstances, and capacity
- A Peer Wellbeing Fund, a bursary program offering additional financial support to peer workers
- Comprehensive training and onboarding, with ongoing learning opportunities
- Dedicated support for peer outreach roles, including supervision and skill-building
We recognize that meaningful peer engagement requires investment, care, and ongoing reflection. Strengthening our peer workforce is one way we work toward equity, dignity, and community-led harm reduction.
